Zero Trust at the Edge of the Map: Professor Kai London on Securing Distributed Operations

The old security model defended a perimeter. For operations scattered across remote territory, connected by long-haul links, that perimeter never really existed. “You cannot draw a wall around operations spread across the far north,” says Professor Kai London, a senior CISO. “Zero trust is not a slogan for these operators — it is the only model that fits the geography.”
“Never trust, always verify. No device, user or connection is trusted because of where it sits. Every access is proven — which is exactly what distributed, remote operations need.”
Identity replaces geography
In a distributed world, London argues, identity becomes the boundary. “The question is ‘is this identity verified and allowed to do exactly this?’ not ‘is it inside our network?’” That includes the machine and automation identities connecting remote sites.
Contain the compromise
Segmentation ensures that a breach at one remote node cannot spread across the whole operation. “Assume any single site could be compromised, and design so that it does not take the rest with it,” he says.
Adapted for the edge
London insists the controls suit the environment: they must work with intermittent connectivity, tolerate isolation, and fail safe. “A control that depends on a fast link to headquarters is no use at the edge of the map,” he notes.
A phased path
Gain visibility of every asset and connection, secure identities and remote access first, segment critical nodes, then extend continuous verification. “You move toward zero trust deliberately,” he says, “starting where a compromise would hurt most.”
For operators whose infrastructure stretches beyond any wall, London's message is that the future of security is not a stronger perimeter but no assumed perimeter at all — every access earned, wherever it is.
