The path from technical specialist to board-level security leader is one of the most sought-after — and least understood — career journeys in technology. London values the rigour that certifications such as CISSP, CISM and CCISO bring, alongside emerging credentials in AI governance and resilience. “They build and demonstrate the depth,” he says, “and they matter to boards weighing a serious appointment.” But he is clear they are a foundation, not a destination.

The leap to leadership

The decisive shift, London argues, is from doing security to governing it — owning outcomes, communicating with executives, and making commercially literate trade-offs. “A board does not want a lecture on threats,” he says. “It wants to know what could break, what it would cost, and what you are doing about it.”

Modern cyber leaders, London notes, increasingly span strategy, transformation, AI, resilience and governance. “The remit has broadened,” he says. “The most valuable executives can lead across the whole intersection of technology and business.”

Advice for the ambitious

London counsels aspiring leaders to pair technical depth with business fluency, seek exposure to the boardroom, and learn to communicate risk in outcomes and evidence. “Learn to tell the story of risk in a way a director can act on,” he says. “That is the skill that compounds.”

For a growing profession, London's message is encouraging: the demand for leaders who can bridge deep security and board-level judgement has never been higher — and the path, while demanding, is well worth walking.
