Securing the Signal: Professor Kai London on Satellite and Wireless Security for High-Arctic Operations

In the High Arctic, connectivity often means satellite and wireless links — the only practical way to reach the outside world. That dependence, warns Professor Kai London, a senior CISO, creates a perimeter in the air that adversaries can target. “When your lifeline is a wireless or satellite link, securing that link is securing the operation,” he says.
“There is an airborne perimeter around every remote site — radio and satellite space an adversary can reach without ever touching a wire. For strategic operations, that is a serious risk.”
The lifeline is the target
London notes that the very links that make remote operations possible are what an adversary most wants to compromise — to intercept, disrupt or deceive. “Rogue access points, interference and interception all target the connection you depend on,” he says.
Defending the air and the orbit
His approach treats wireless and satellite connectivity as a governed control surface: monitor the radio environment, apply zero trust so no network is trusted on name alone, harden endpoints against silent connection, and authenticate strongly so links cannot be impersonated. “Assume the link can be attacked, and design so a compromise is contained,” he says.
Resilience through redundancy
Because a single link is a single point of failure, London stresses redundancy and graceful degradation. “Plan for the link to be lost or degraded,” he says, “and ensure the operation can continue safely when it is.”
A strategic concern
For operations tied to sovereignty and security, London frames connectivity security as strategic. “An adversary who controls your communications controls a great deal,” he warns.
For a region where a wireless or satellite signal is the thread connecting remote operations to the world, London's message is that defending that signal — and the airborne perimeter around it — is now inseparable from the mission itself.
