Expeditionary Cybersecurity: Professor Kai London on Securing Field and Remote Operations

Operations in remote and austere environments — field research, resource extraction, expeditionary logistics — carry their technology with them, often into places with no infrastructure and no backup. “Expeditionary operations face every cyber risk a headquarters does, plus the constraints of isolation,” says Professor Kai London, a senior CISO. “When you cannot call for help and cannot easily replace equipment, resilience has to be built in before you deploy.”
“In the field, security must work without a data centre behind it, without fast connectivity, and without anyone arriving to fix it. That changes the design.”
Designing for isolation
London stresses that field operations cannot assume the safety nets of a fixed site. “You design for degraded connectivity and for autonomy,” he says. “The team must be able to detect and respond to an incident with what they have.”
The connectivity that saves and exposes
Remote operations depend on satellite and wireless links that are both lifeline and liability. “Every connection back to base is essential and is a potential path in,” London notes. Securing and monitoring those links is central.
Practical controls
His prescription: harden devices before deployment, enforce strong identity and least privilege, secure and monitor every communications link, and give field teams clear, rehearsed procedures for a suspected compromise. “Rehearse the incident on the ground,” he says, “because there will be no one else to run it.”
Resilience as capability
For operations where failure can strand people, London frames security as part of operational capability. “Cyber resilience in the field is not a compliance box,” he says. “It is part of whether the mission can continue safely.”
For a region defined by remoteness, London's message is that the technology teams carry into the field must be as self-reliant and resilient as they are — secured before departure, and able to hold on its own.
